The hunt is on for a man who has sexually assaulted two women in Brighton in as many days. Police have warned women to 'be cautious' about walking alone in Brighton, especially over the New Year period following a second late night sex attack in the city.

A 20-year-old woman was grabbed by a man and sexually assaulted in Steine Lane, an alleyway in Old Steine behind the Pavilion Tavern, at about 2.30am on Friday morning (December 30). She was grabbed from behind by the man who pulled at her clothing and sexually assaulted her before she managed to break free and run away.

Detective Sergeant Chris Sherwell confirmed that the incident was being linked to a similar one that happened just off Russell Square at 1.45am on Thursday morning (December 29) where an 18-year-old woman managed to escape from a man of a similar description who sexually assaulted her and punched her in the face before she managed to escape.

Both crimes happened in quiet areas where there was no-one else around.

DS Sherwell said: "These were alarming and very distressing experiences for these two young women and we believe that the suspect could be the same man. He is described as black or dark skinned, around 30, about 6', of medium or slightly tubby appearance, with very short or no hair and a very distinctive accent.

"In the middle of what should be an enjoyable festive season, I regret having to issue a warning of this nature and we are working hard to identify this man and put a stop to his offending. However, I must also suggest that women and girls should be extremely cautious about walking alone late at night, particularly in secluded areas and even for short distances where they might be separated from friends and other people."

Anyone with information about the attacks or who thinks they may know or have seen the suspect is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 592 of 30/12. Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
