Cable cars for Brighton and Hove – what do you think?
By GeorgeHA | Monday, October 03, 2011, 12:39
Here's a novel idea – cable cars from the motorway to Brighton and Hove's seafront. To cut out traffic, pollution and to speed up the whole process, as well as being a tourist attraction in its own right.
-
"Locals may use it for getting around town without hold-ups or pollution, possibly encouraging walking and cycling by cutting out difficult parts of current journeys like hills and traffic snarl-ups..." (NB pic not of actual proposal)
The following ePetition is now online an the City Council website:
We the undersigned petition the council to take the initiative and encourage private investment into innovative private projects in Brighton and Hove, at no cost to the council or tax payers, to promote business and employment locally. We ask the council to invite feasibility studies for a new cable car service to take visitors from the motorways directly to the seafront to stop adding to congestion and air pollution in Lewes Road and London Road and other parts of our city.
Nigel Carter of B&H UKIP explains the thinking behind the project:
"A competition could be held to decide the best proposal by inviting residents to vote online and at libraries.
"This could be a money-earner for the council: a private investor could charge fares to repay the build-cost and pay the council a percentage, or a rental or a licence fee.
"It may be an extra visitor attraction with an ideal scenic route to see both the beautiful Sussex Downs and seafront, and could link various attractions and other parts of Brighton and Hove if there is demand.
Locals may use it for getting around town without hold-ups or pollution, possibly encouraging walking and cycling by cutting out difficult parts of current journeys like hills and traffic snarl-ups.
"It could be powered by renewables such as wind or tidal power.
We are looking for entrepreneurial activity to help support Brighton and Hove's future success and solve local problems."

I LOVE this idea! I'd take ride round just to see the view. But would enough people support it? Let's make Brighton and Hove a happening place like it used to be and back schemes like this. It's crazy... but it might just work!

ReportOh dear, that comment was meant to support a link to an image of the old Devil's Dyke Cable Car page from 1900 - but it didn't work for some reason.................sorry.....

ReportThis sounds like a great idea! The traffic out of Brighton on Saturday evening was unbelievable. Hot weather seems to bring traffic to a standstill.
