Public sector workers across the UK are due to go on strike on 30 November. How will your services in Brighton and Hove be affected?

The main event will be a major demonstration through the town. Feeder marches will go from big workplaces to meet at Victoria Gardens at 11:45am to set off on the main march.

Below are further details for how services may be affected if the strike goes ahead, but they may change. This page will be updated when more information is available.

Schools

It is expected that the majority of schools will be closed. To confirm if a school will be closed it is recommended you contact the school nearer the time or on the day.

So far, the folowing schools have contacted the Council and confirmed that they will close if a strike goes ahead on 30 November. However, not all schools will know until the day before or even the day itself so parents should contact the school directly to be sure.

Recycling, refuse and street cleaning

It is likely that any recycling and refuse collections planned for that day will not go ahead. For information on collections and when this work would be cleared go to the Council's recycling, refuse and street cleaning page.

Transport in the city

The marches on the day could well affect public transport including bus services. Up to date information on the main bus routes should be available on the Brighton & Hove Buses page.

The first marches are expected to start at 10:30am and move through the following locations:

  • East Brighton Park to Victoria Gardens
  • Hove Town Hall to Victoria Gardens
  • Lewes Road to Victoria Gardens
  • North Street, Queens Road, North Road to the Level

Why are they striking?

The Coalition proposes changes to pensions for public sector workers, and spending cuts.

It's mainly about pensions - as people live longer, the cost of funding public sector pensions is "unsustainable", says the government. It wants most public sector workers to:

    •    pay more into their pensions

    •    work for longer

    •    and accept a pension based on a "career average" salary, rather than the current final salary arrangement

Unions, however, say the proposals will leave their members paying more and working longer for less.

They're right to strike, who will choose to work in the public sector if the pension is no good? Pay is not great and there is no job security anymore. What will keep young health workers in the NHS when they could work privately? The pension and relative job security was always the attraction of the public sector but it is no more...
