  • Deputy Mayor Geoff Wells introduces, the guest of honour, a direct descendant of Charles DIckens
  • Ian Dickens is the great-great-grandson of the great author, and bears more than a slight resemblance to his illustrious ancestor
  • Ian Dickens told the crowd how much Charles Dickens liked Brighton. The hotel stands on the site of the former Bedford Hotel, where Dickens was a frequent guest on his many trips to Brighton.
  • Ian's DIckens speech included an extract from a book written by Charles DIckens' son entitled 'Memories of my Father' by Henry Fielding Dickens the eighth of his ten children. It described the effect Charles DIckens had when he walked down the street. HIs fame was immense and passers-by would gape and cheer
  • The unveiling
  • The original plaque at the Bedford Hotel was destroyed when it burned down in 1964, so this moment was long overdue
  • Roger Amerena, member of the Commemorative Plaque Committee and dressed in suitable attire, tells the assembled crowd that there will be a short talk inside by Rose Collis, local author of New Encyclopaedia of Brighton

  • ..and then, courtesy of the Holiday Inn Hotel, a sumptuous spread was provided. It had been pretty cold out there, so this was a very welcome reward...
